The Ferrari 296 GTB is the latest addition to the Ferrari
model line-up. Electric and hybrid cars are becoming common place and the 296
GTB takes that technology and merges it with a V6 engine producing the next
evolution for Ferrari following the SF90 Ferraris first foray into PHEV.
The 296 GTB is a two-seater, mid-engine Ferrari,
complimented with the all new 120° V6 engine coupled with a plug-in (PHEV)
electric motor. This car has it all, the power, looks and a futuristic cabin.
This package aims to be a thrilling, high performance ‘fun to drive’ car as
well as being usable as an everyday driver. Here at JCT600 Leeds Ferrari the
296 GTB is a favourite amongst many.
The 120° V6 engine has been designed for the ultimate racing
feel, the first Ferrari to fit a mid-rear V6 was the 246 SP in 1961, the
history of using a V6 engine is evident and lead to large success with Ferrari
claiming its first Formula 1 Constructors’ title with the 156 F1 powered by a
120° V6 in 1961. It has been noted that this engine packs a signature sounds distinct
of a V6 and the force of the turbos and all the components working together
creates high-frequency notes close to that of a naturally aspirated V12.
The Assetto Fiorano package takes the 296 GTB to the next
level. It includes aerodynamic additions to the bodywork and weight reductions leading
to an increase in performance. Carbon fibre is used throughout the car to save
weight, such as the redesigned door panels which save 12kg. The paintwork is
also adjusted to signify the Asetto Fiorano version showcasing a livery
inspired by the 250 LM which starts at the front bumper and follows to the rear
of the vehicle which we think is the icing on the cake, the 296 GTB has a
wonderful road presence, and the beauty really shows with the variety of colour
combinations available.
The design of the 296 GTB has been created to be compact and
modern. The Berlinetta design results in a shorter wheelbase for an improved
driving experience and the design features a vertical rear windscreen, muscular
mudguards and a visor roof.
The interior of the Ferrari 296 GTB has changed from the
traditional analog interface to a fully digital cockpit which was first
introduced on the SF90 Stradale. The result has been characterized as elegant
and an extension of the exterior which keeps you engaged and immersed further
in the driving experience.
The performance of the 296 GTB is very impressive. 2.9 seconds to 0 – 100 km/h and 7.3 seconds to 0 – 200 km/h. The power is a combination of the combustion and electric engine working cohesively for maximum output. These figures create a driving experience to thrill the driver, revving to 8500rpm the 296 GTB can be pushed to its limits. This is proven by a speedy lap of 1 minute 21 seconds at the Fiorino circuit showing this car is capable, agile and exciting.
